CHARLESTON, VA (AP) – The Board of Governors of the University of West Virginia paid $ 250,000 for the death of a student in a fraternity home in 2014.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the state's risk and insurance management board has accepted the settlement in which the WVU board has denied any responsibility in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Michael Burch.
Burch was found unconscious and did not breathe at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house in Morgantown. He was from Williamsville, New York, in the suburbs of Buffalo. Police determined that it was an alcohol related death.
The lawsuit was filed by Burch's parents in 2015 in the Monongalia County District Court.
As part of the settlement, the insurer also donated $ 20,000 to the WVU Children's Hospital Critical Care and $ 5,000 to the Organ Recovery and Organ Recovery Center.
