ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – Shea Patterson made three touchdown passes, one for each of the first three quarters, to help 21st Michigan win a 49-3 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.

Patterson, the reported Mississippi transfer, was 12-for-17 for 125 yards. He signed up for two goals against wide receiver after the group of positions recorded only three touchdowns last season for the Wolverines (1-1).

Karan Higdon scored 140 of his 156 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. The Wolverines desperately needed that win after losing four straight games last season for their longest losing streak since 2009. They lost by seven last week to Notre Dame.

The Broncos (0-2) have not been able to come out of a big deficit as they did before losing last week to Syracuse.

Michigan dominated each phase of the game.

Higdon had a 67-yard run in the first quarter and Chris Evans scored his first of two touchdowns on a 27-yard run to take the Wolverines to 21-0.

Noah Furbush intercepted a pass in the first quarter and Khaleke Hudson blocked a kick in the second quarter, setting a TD while Michigan led 35-0 at halftime.

The Broncos avoided a shutout when Josh Grant scored a 35-yard goal at 2:34.

THE TAKEAWAY

Western Michigan: The Broncos can not afford to continue digging huge holes in the first period. They were led by Syracuse last week at home 34-7 before scoring 28 points in the third quarter to end up in a TD and finish with a 55-42 loss.
