Thousands of customers were affected Friday when Comcast Xfinity experienced a mass blackout across the country. Guilty party? Two cut fiber cables.
Customers began complaining of a widespread blackout of the Internet, television and phone service early Friday. The company confirmed the breakdown at approximately 2:30 pm, approximately two hours after the outage began.
The problem also apparently affected the Xfinity Service Status page, according to a tweet by journalist Matthew Keyes . The page was where the customer service headed many unhappy customers, which would require an internet connection that many did not have.
On Saturday morning, customers complained again as engineers continued to work on the issue.

No information has been published about what caused the damage to the cable or whether a backup system is available to customers. Comcast Cares Twitter said the fibers belonged to their "backbone network providers."
