What did Alicia and Charlie see on "Fear The Walking Dead"? They finally found what they needed to continue

Spoilers to come for the September 16th episode Fear the undead. Good news may have arrived Fear the undead. However, in the great tradition of the AMC franchise, this good news takes the form of a cliffhanger. What do Alicia and Charlie see Fear the undead? Their new source of hope is a minor mystery.

At the end of the episode, Alicia and Charlie head for the Texas coast in search of a beautiful day of relaxation. While they are still hundreds of miles from the large expanses of water, they encounter a flooded area that Charlie says "counting" as a beach for her. Then both see something in the distance that illuminates their faces. What is it? Both characters want different things right now, so their shared elation is intriguing. Something, or someone, comes to help them.

The background of Martha, the former English teacher and post-apocalyptic serial killer terrorizing the rest of the group in Season 4, reveals that being useful or not is a theme this season. Fear the undead. Martha has adopted an attitude of "no good unpunished actions" to the extreme. After no one helped her injured husband, she lost her head in isolation and ended up killing the good people behind the supply boxes. (We'll never know who's really behind these boxes, is not it?) Everyone Morgan and others have met has either profited or sabotaged this altruistic operation.)

Martha's unassisted vendetta and Morgan's attempt to help her survivors by taking them to Alexandria are reflected in Alicia and Charlie's storyline, several miles away. Charlie wants to find and help adults. Alicia thinks they'd better help each other. Taking Charlie to the beach for the first time is something that she can do, and for now, she thinks that's enough.

So what did they spot on the horizon that raised their two minds and ended their argument about what to do next? It was surprising and not making much noise. So, probably not a person or a pack of dolphins.

Did they find a boat? Fear the undead spent a lot of time on the high seas, especially in season 2. It would be logical to see them return to these roots.

Maybe it was the raft of John Dorie that they saw. The hat Charlie finds is very similar to his. Strand is also with John, heading to an island. So, in theory, both girls could go to the beach and find their old surviving companions. That would explain why they were both so happy to see what they saw.

Such coincidences, which would seem impossible in a country as vast as Texas, are slightly more plausible at the end of the world. The fewer people alive, the more likely you are to meet someone you have already met. It's always good for morale when groups merge Fear the undead. Bad guys like Martha may like to be alone and murder without mercy for that to happen, but survivors need each other. Unless, of course, that the missing hat indicates that something bad happened to John, it looks like another happy meeting is going on.
