Semi-spoilers for all those who are not caught by The Walking Dead in the last episode of Season 9.
For the majority, The dead who walk puts an end to the stories of his characters in a concrete way, usually through uncomfortable deaths and infused with blood. Surprisingly, however, Austin Amelio's Dwight became completely AWOL after the end of season 8 of the final of the war. With the jump in time of season 9 and other elements that alter the show, fans want to know where Dwight is and the actor has recently proposed his own answer. According to Amelio:
I'm going to find Sherry. I'm alive. He does not kill me. We'll see what happens.
Of course, it's largely what the public assumed was happening with Dwight, who eventually found himself a banned but free man after Rick kidnapped Negan once and for all. (Well, maybe not permanently.) The last time Dwight appeared on the screen, he found a touching note of Sherry that inspired him to hit the road to find her.
The end-of-game exile of Dwight certainly implied that Austin Amelio would be out of season 9, and the jump in time did nothing to instill confidence in his imminent return. The total lack of promotional material in Dwight also made fans' hopes unwise. Yet, Dwight has never been shown to be brutally murdered, which Walking Dead Supervisor Scott Gimple has confirmed that his chances of returning to The dead who walkThe story is better than 0%. Not huge, but then everyone does not even have those chances.
Although his televised narrative has no bearing on what is happening in the current cities of Alexandria or Hilltop (or the shrine, elsewhere), Dwight would spark some intrigue. it resurfaces. That would probably mean that he found Sherry, alive or dead. The emotional changes from one result to the next are vast, so we might see a more satisfied and understanding Dwight, or completely devastated by heart-wrenching and revengeful goals.
Dwight's return after the deadline could also imply that he would feel sufficiently punished and that a penance would have been inflicted over the past several months. The times are really tough for small groups of survivors, so a desperate and oppressed Dwight would probably need to prove why he should be allowed to return to one of Virginia's communities.
Speaking at the weekend of Walker Stalker Con (via ComicBook.com), Austin Amelio expressed his feelings about Dwight's banishment after the war, despite the character's every effort to help the protagonists to thwart Negan .
I think he's paid his dues at this point. I think that's right. He hates Negan, he loves his wife. He's going to get his wife.
Obviously, no guarantee is attached to the hunt for a character lost to a character. Allowed, The dead who walk started with Rick having to reconnect with Lori and Carl. In season 2, however, the group's long group hunt ended in the darkest possible way, with the girl getting screwed. The following seasons also offered lamentable resolutions after the characters disappeared. The missing saviors of season 9 are the most recent example on this front.
That said, The dead who walk has been amused in recent years by recalling the first seasons in different ways. His 100th episode intentionally reflected the pilot unexpectedly, and even Morales from Season 1 returned for an ephemeral turn. In addition, it was confirmed this summer that The punisherJon Bernthal makes his appearance in season 9 as Shane Walsh, long gone.
Of course, Shane's new appearance is scheduled for the last episode of Andrew Lincoln under the name of Rick Grimes and is not quite comparable to that of Dwight. Yet this is an example of how The dead who walkS's creative team can redirect his ensemble, past and present. Once again, the biggest fans of the character should not lose hope that Austin Amelio's Dwight will be able to return to our television screens in the future.
In comics, Dwight was more easily embraced by Rick's group when he showed his allegiance. Despite some trust issues, Dwight became the leader of the Saviors who stayed together instead of joining other communities, and was a leader in the military squad. This will obviously not be adapted to note for television, which is not such a bad thing.
Personally, I think it's more fun to consider the more marginal options as to how Dwight might go back to The dead who walk, since he probably would not be welcomed with open arms. (How do you really feel, Tara?) The jump in time does just about everything that is achievable, like the efforts of Jadis / Anne as an active member of society. Putting aside the fact that she had ruined it in a predictable manner by calling on her helicopters, it remains no less than the time itself can often play the most important role in changing the personality of the characters.
What if Dwight makes a shocking comeback in any of the next episodes, and turns out that HE is the cause of Rick's death? The most likely possibility, but being isolated from the outside can have serious consequences on anyone's mental state. Dwight could be driven mad by anger directed against Rick & Co. for putting him in this position initially.
Alternately, The dead who walk could get Dwight to be more involved in Maggie and Daryl's plans for Negan. We do not know yet how much Maggie wants to take matters into her own hands before making her own way out, but her eyes are a window into all sorts of deadly intentions that Dwight can understand. Moreover, Dwight and Daryl obviously have much more in common than Daryl had ever admitted. Therefore, bringing them together for a real team mission could lead to tense sequences.
To go deeper into the depths of speculation, what will happen if Dwight is involved in the human-traffic tasks of the helicopter pilot? Of course, he could be a participating member of this club, but I would rather think that maybe they've gotten Sherry out and he's trying to eliminate them. (Every Dwight's return is invested in revenge, that's right.)
As a last option, I think it would be great if Dwight turned out to be a Whisperer every time those chaotic villains were introduced. It's certainly not proud of facial scars caused by Negan, and in a world without masked superheroes, I guess the best thing for Dwight to do would be to cover the face of a walker. As such, this option is tied to both Dwight's self-awareness and his vengeance against the good. A perfect fit, just like the skin combination.
The dead who walk aired Sunday night on AMC at 9:00 ET, so be sure to keep tunning to see if and when Dwight might come back. On the other hand, make sure to stay abreast of all the other new TV shows and upcoming fall shows that will definitely not make Sherry's hunt for Dwight.
