Thousands of US Central Planners destined for the United States should be considered asylum seekers if they are not refugees in detention centers, unless they have a criminal record, said Friday the US Senator Bob Menendez.
Menendez, a Democrat seeking a third full term on November 6, said that the United States has put in place a system of assistance to migrants in the caravan, which does not require that the country imprison them at the US-Mexico border. The issue has become a major issue for President Trump as he is campaigning for Republicans to retain control of Congress next year.
"The Congressional Budget Office has put in place many demonstrable methods that do not take detention centers," Menendez said in an interview with this newspaper. "Ankle monitoring, joining people with lawyers to make sure they show up for their hearings, bail finally granted by the family … there are many ways to ensure the appearance of people."
The initial group of migrants left Honduras about two weeks ago, while other Americans from Central America joined them to travel north. Menendez said the case is a failure of the Trump administration to examine the root causes of violence in Central America.
"They are fleeing because they are facing horrific violence," he said. "Their choice is to stay and die, or to flee and take a chance to live, so they run away."
Menendez, who was raised in Union City, is perhaps the toughest fight of his life for the elections. His lead over Republican Bob Hugin in the latest polls is as low as five points. At this point in his re-election campaign in 2012, Menendez led his challenger by 18 points. Cook's political report moved his race note to the Democratic New Jersey Senate's thin bounce Friday, panicking Democrats in the state and nationwide.
Hugin, a former pharmaceutical executive, has built his campaign around the allegations that led to the Menendez corruption trial last year, a lawsuit that ended without a verdict while the jurors were in court. # 39; impasse.
