Although the bathing season may be over in many parts of the country, this week, in a pool in Southern California, 19 children and adults became ill after being exposed to pool chemicals.

Twelve children and seven adults were taken to local hospitals on Wednesday night, USA today reported. Ventura County Fire Chief Stan Ziegler told the Ventura County Star they had been "submerged by emanations".

Authorities believe that the pool equipment malfunctioned at Daland Swim School in Thousand Oaks, California, causing an excess of chlorine – a chemical used to kill bacteria – to be pumped into the pool, reported Associated Press agency.

Chlorine poisoning may be serious, but all affected people should recover completely, according to the PA.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some of the sick swimmers have reported breathing difficulties, one of the most common signs of chlorine exposure. Other symptoms include a burning sensation in the throat, nose or eyes; cough; watery eyes; and even nausea or vomiting or fluid in the lungs.

If you are exposed to excessive amounts of chlorine, the most important thing is to leave the premises. "Installing quickly in an area where fresh air is available is extremely effective in reducing chlorine exposure," according to the CDC. Wash your body with soap and water and remove any clothing that may have been exposed, including swimsuits. The next step is to immediately consult a doctor, even if there is no antidote for chlorine exposure. Instead, health professionals will treat any symptoms you may have. (For example, you may need treatment for wheezing or difficulty breathing.)

Although you probably know about chlorine in swimming pools, chlorine is a bigger threat in the form of household cleaners containing the chemical. Accidental spills or swallowing may cause burns and poisoning. Always store these products out of the reach of children.

Exposure to chlorine and intoxication is all the more dangerous as the chemical you are exposed to is important, according to Mount Sinai. The faster you can get medical help, the better your chances of recovering completely.
