A little after 7:20 pm on Sunday night, I was part of a small crowd that gathered outside Union Station to contemplate a strange and dazzling light show in the sky. For a few seconds, I wondered if Don Trump had pissed off the bad foreign dictator who had sent a missile to California. Yes. But a guy who works in the kitchen of the new chain of the chain, Imperial Western Beer, reassured everyone when he offered, "Elon's is preparing something."
Indeed he was there. At 7:21 pm, Elon Musk's Space X launched its Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base between Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara. The first stage of the rocket then landed at the base, a first on the west coast ground. In the cloudless sky, the launch has produced an incredibly beautiful (though momentarily unsettling) effect in the observed sky from northern California to San Diego and even to the east to Arizona.
Beginning with my picture of DTLA, here are some views of the whole region.
