Public Health England issued a health warning following the death of a Briton from rabies contracted as a result of a cat bite in Morocco.

Rabies is a viral brain infection usually transmitted by contact with an infected animal.

Dogs are the main source of infection in most parts of the world, although almost all mammals can be infected.

Rabies does not circulate in wild or domestic animals in the UK, but between 2000 and 2017, five UK residents were infected with rabies after "animal exposures abroad" , added PHE.

The government body has published information on the case, as well as travel tips to tourists bitten and scratched by an animal abroad.

They added: "This recall comes after the tragic death of a resident of the United Kingdom after being infected with rabies as a result of a cat bite during a visit to Morocco. "

But where in the world should travelers be wary?

Rabies is prevalent worldwide, but some areas are at higher risk, including dogs.

Asia, Africa, Central America and South America pose a higher risk, while some regions have been declared officially free of rabies.

Since January 2006, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Fiji, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, the United Iceland and Japan are countries free of rabies.

What signs shows an infected animal?

It can be from a wide range of different things. Usually, in these cases, it is what we call "furious rage": the animal is agitated, it runs, tries to bite, it salivates a lot – its behavior is quite unusual.

You can catch a "dumb rage" in which the animal is extremely calm, withdrawn and does nothing. It may make you more likely to want to cuddle and cuddle, but they may also have rabies.

The advice is to avoid contact with animals in endemic countries.

How do people contract him?

As a rule, it is bitten by the animal, but less obvious elements, such as scratching or even licking, are enough to contact to be infected.

What can people do to protect themselves?

Avoid contact with animals and ask for travel tips before traveling abroad.

In most cases, unless you obviously have many unavoidable contacts with animals or are traveling to a very remote place where you will not be able to get to health centers quickly if you are stung, you would not be vaccinated before leaving.

We rely on post-exposure vaccination. So, if someone has been bitten, licked or you have any concerns, clean the wound with water and soap as soon as you can.

This will disable and eliminate much of the virus, if any, and will require medical attention.

You would be expected to be vaccinated against rabies, a very effective vaccine to prevent disease, provided you give it early enough.

These are immediate medical care, and that is very important because if you start to have symptoms of rabies, it is almost always fatal.
