If you wait for the publication of A star is bornyou are probably so ready for it to be October. But what's good is that while you're waiting for the release of the movie, you can watch each other Star is born versions, the original and the two previous remakes. In case you do not know, this year's Oscar nominee is based on a film of the same name dating back to 1937 and starring Janet Gaynor as a future Hollywood actor who falls in love with an established Hollywood actor whose career begins to decline. After this one, two other versions were realized: one in 1954 and another in 1976.
The good news is that with three movies you'll have a lot to watch before the fourth comes out. The bad news is that it is quite difficult to find movies online for free. Last June, Deadline announced that Netflix had announced the inclusion of a special edition of the 1976 version. But today, Netflix has confirmed to Bustle that the film has since been removed.
Fortunately, Amazon offers the 1954 and 1976 versions. You have to pay for them, but they are much cheaper than other movies at only $ 0.99. The good thing is that you do not have to worry about the streaming service that removes the movie, so you have to keep it forever and watch it as many times as you like. YouTube also offers several versions of the 1937 full-length movie in decent quality.
Each movie has a very similar plot, but has a new twist of history. The 1954 version was the first to turn the Hollywood tale into a musical starring Judy Garland in the role of Esther. In the film, she is an aspiring singer, who begins a romantic relationship with Norman, a prolific musician who is experiencing a decline in his career, pushing him to self-destructive behavior. Once he meets Esther, he begins to change and feels motivated to help him achieve his celebrity dreams. But while Esther's musical career flourished, Norman's destructive tendencies intensified, threatening his career and ruining his own.
The 1976 version follows a tumultuous love story of the music industry, but focuses on the world of rock star, which makes it very different from the previous version. In this film, Esther (Barbra Streisand) begins a romantic relationship with a self-destructive rock star called John Norman Howard after helping her escape from a bar when meeting a fan. Like the 1954 version, John Norman Howard motivated her to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer, bringing her on stage at one of her shows. But once her career has taken off and she is more successful than his, their relationship gets worse.
The next 2018 release follows a similar route to Barbra Streisand's classic, giving the characters new names. Bradley Cooper plays Jackson, an alcoholic country-rock musician who falls in love with the unknown singer Ally. Once Jackson brought Ally on stage with him, it started her career, turning her into a true pop star, much like Lady Gaga herself. But Jackson's alcoholism gets the better of him when Ally becomes a big star, which makes him emotionally violent and jealous of his success.
With four films, the story is told in a powerful way that begins as a love story but turns into a lesson of what happens when men become jealous and try to undermine women's success. Looking at each version, you will see how much the main story sounds today and why Bradley Cooper wanted to bring this story to life.
