LAKEWOOD – The iconic White Fence Farm in Lakewood will close December 30th.
The restaurant, known for its farm setting with attractions such as a children's farm, a gift shop, a duck pond, a stage and a dining room, experienced financial difficulties and recorded a net loss for about a year. year, according to General Manager Whitney. Carloss.
"Over the past four or five years, Denver has changed dramatically, with more than 200 restaurants open every year, and we've seen a dramatic drop in the number of customers," said Carloss. "People come to White Fence Farm once a year to celebrate a birthday, but it's more of a destination than a place frequented by people."
Carloss also cited employment as the closing decision factor.
"It's hard to get and keep a good job," said Carloss.
White Fence Farm currently employs 91 part-time and full-time workers, as well as seasonal workers.
Carloss stated that these employees had received notice of approximately 60 days and would remain until the closing of the restaurant.
"They will get excellent references from the owners and myself," Carloss said. "They will not have trouble finding another job, regardless of their career."
Charlie Wilson first opened the White Fence Farm in July 1973 after converting from a hay and cattle farm to a restaurant today.
The restaurant changed hands in 2014, when veteran restaurateurs Tom Piercy and Craig Caldwell purchased it at a parent company – P & C Family Farms Restaurants – at an undisclosed purchase price.
Piercy and Caldwell previously owned restaurants in Denver and announced plans to expand the restaurant by opening satellite locations in the Denver subway. The last satellite station at Capitol Hill closed in February of this year.
"No one could predict the evolution of Denver's workforce and all that was booming, so many restaurants opening up, all these people settling here … receiving home food, all of which contributed to it, "said Caldwell.
His specialty is a "family-style farm chicken" dinner consisting of fried chicken and unlimited entrees of bean salad, beet marinated corn fritters and coleslaw. Cottage cheese is also available on request.
P & C Family Farms Restaurants has also been the subject of three recent lawsuits for breach of contract and sale / delivery of products to food distribution companies, all of which have been closed since.
