Who is Nova Galaxia?

Nova Galaxia is a 26-year-old woman from Virginia, United States.

She first noticed hairs on her face when she was only 12 years old.

But as a result of teasing other children, she decided to shave and was diagnosed with PCOS four years later.

Coming back to the bullying of his childhood, Nova said, "A boy from my high school class pointed my face up and said I had a better beard than he'd ever possibly have fact."

However, after 13 years of shaving, Nova decided to enlarge his beard for the first time last year.

After taking part in the November No Shave Cancer Awareness Campaign, Nova permanently gave up his daily razor habit.

Why does she have facial hair?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is an incredibly common condition that affects one in five women.

It occurs when the bags in the ovaries sit in are unable to release an egg each month, which leads to irregular ovulation.

One of the many side effects of PCOS is the excess of insulin that passes through the body.

In turn, this then increases the production of androgens (male hormones) that can lead to excess hair on the face.

While many women have chosen to remove their facial hair, Nova has decided to adopt her after years of shame of her condition.

Why did she stop shaving?

Nova says that her happy relationship with her friend Ash Byrd gave her the confidence she needed to get rid of razors.

She said, "My confidence has grown a lot now, I let go of this thing that I hated myself for so long."

Since she's found her acceptance in a romantic relationship, Nova now has the confidence to bear her beard with pride – something she called "dark secret."

Nova has been with his partner Ash, who has not identified as a man or a woman, since 2012.

How does it sensitize?

Nova is now using its social media platform to raise public awareness of PCOS and to provide advice on beard maintenance.

As a result of "society's pressure on women to shave and comply," Nova launched the YouTube channel BeardedBabe where she discusses the biases she faces as well as filming beauty tutorials.
