At about the same time as tryptophan comes into play, the Dallas Cowboys will host the Washington Redskins at 4:30 pm. in a Thanksgiving game that will have major implications on the race in the east of the NFC.
But who should Eagles fans root up for?
Although both results give the Eagles an opportunity despite their 4-6 record, the favored Cowboys winning Thanksgiving would give the Eagles the most hope of running in the division.
It's complicated, but here's why.
At 5-5, the Cowboys have just one game in front of the Eagles, and say the Eagles win against the Giants this weekend, after the 12th week, the Birds would be a match behind the Redskins and Cowboys.
As the 13th week approaches, Dallas will host the New Orleans Saints, while the Eagles host the Redskins on Monday Night Football. If the Saints beat the Cowboys and Eagles against the Redskins, all three teams would end up at 6-6, Dallas holding the tie breaker on the Eagles and Eagles with the same tiebreaker on the Redskins.
The 14th week would take the Eagles to the "Jerry World" of Arlington, Texas, for a showdown that would not only give the Eagles the opportunity to cancel the decisive encounter against the Cowboys, but also to strengthen their division record at 3 1 and drop Dallas to 3-2.
This scenario, even with a loss to the Rams in L.A., could give the Eagles a chance to win the division in Landover, Maryland, in the final game of the season.
Better than you thought, right? Well, all this would require the Eagles to recover and eventually need to win all the remaining games, apart from a split against the Rams or home against the Texans.
Dallas has a much tougher schedule than the Redskins, being forced to host the Saints and play in Indianapolis, allowing the Eagles to face it more easily each week and preserve the division record.
The victory of the Redskins on Thursday is a much more difficult path. That means Colt McCoy and the rest of the weakened Redskins team could be ready for a stretch bout at NFC East.
If Washington won, the Eagles would end up at two Redskins games, with five to play. Even with a Washington sweep in their last two games, putting the teams tied, Washington's games away from the division against Jacksonville and Tennessee are easier than the Eagles playing at the Rams and at home against the Texans, especially for a team able to enter Dallas and win a victory.
Not to mention that a team that can beat the Cowboys on the road will be more difficult to sweep than a team that looks lost without its starting quarterback.
Even if the two results have nothing to envy to the coffin of the Eagles, defeating Dallas against the Redskins and Washington should give the Eagles more hope to get a record of 9-7 and an NFC title won on the last day of the season.
