All season, a third game for the Alabama-Clemson title is revealed inevitable.
Crimson Tide and Tigers were the top two ranked teams in the initial ranking of university football matches, and rightly so. Both teams were completely dominant, especially in Alabama.
But a team could put an end to the Alabama-Clemson trilogy: Michigan.

Penn State embarrassed Michigan last year at Happy Valley, and the Wolverines have not forgotten. In the final chapter of his revenge novel, Michigan crushed Trace McSorley and the Nittany Lions to 42-7 at Michigan Stadium.
It was a complete domination from the beginning to the end. And that followed the formula that Jim Harbaugh used all season. Michigan is known for its top-ranked defense, but the Harbaugh offensive destroyed the PSU's defense with a powerful game, mixing pass plays and Shea Patterson's assists en route. The Wolverines rushed for 259 yards while Patterson was an effective 11 of 17 for 144 yards and two goals.
Michigan's lead was only 14-0 at half-time, but it completely controlled the clock for two quarters. This paid off in the third and fourth quarters. By the time the second half was up, a seven-minute mark in the third quarter completely exhausted Penn State's defense.
On the other side, Michigan's top-ranked defense completely smothered PSU's attack, giving it only 186 yards. Don Brown's unit, which saw the return of Rashan Gary on Saturday, is completely stacked, especially in the first seven.
This recipe – a power, a ball control attack and an unpleasant defense – seems to have the potential to be a success in the playoffs. This would be particularly true against Clemson, a team that has not faced a team as physical as Michigan this season. Give Don Brown a month to prepare for an attack with a real quarterback and Michigan would have a great chance against the Tigers.
But there are some caveats. Alabama demolishing the LSU No. 3 at Baton Rouge suggests an opening among the top four. Michigan, No. 5 in last week's standings, is the obvious candidate to gain ground. But to avoid Alabama and face No. 2 Clemson, who improved to 9-0 by tearing Louisville 77-16, the Wolverines will have to make a leap from Notre Dame without defeat to rank 3.
Notre Dame beat Michigan in the first week at South Bend. The two teams are a lot better than they were on September 1, but there is no way the committee could put Michigan ahead of the Irish if both win, right?
Perhaps one of the remaining teams at Notre Dame – Florida State, No. 19 Syracuse and USC – could do a favor to the Wolverines.
