The status of Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert is in the air before Saturday's game against UCLA.
Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal announced Monday that Herbert was in shock. Herbert was injured at one point during Arizona's 44-15 loss to Arizona this weekend. Cristobal said the program was not quite sure of the date of the injury, but conceded that it might be a game in the final minutes of the match.
Herbert, who is considered the best prospect for the country's professional quarterback, remained inexplicably in the game when the Ducks took possession of the 29-point ball within four minutes of the end. He led the offensive deep within the territory of Arizona and had a hard time trying to run for a touchdown.
The game – third and goal from Arizona's 7-yard line – was broken with 1:04 to go to the clock. Herbert was stopped at the 1 meter line and took a hard blow to the helmet in the process. On the fourth run, her pass was incomplete and the Ducks returned.
Why was Herbert still in the game?
According to The Oregonian, Cristobal said at his Monday press conference that he hoped the team could end the match "on a positive note of the offensive". That's why he kept Herbert in the game.
"We wanted to be able to move the ball and get out of there by having at least some sort of confidence in potentially moving and scoring," said Cristobal.
Herbert threw a touchdown pass on Oregon's previous attempt to reduce the Wildcats' lead to 37-15 with a time of 9:17 to play. But Arizona went through the field on his next attempt to put the final nail in the coffin with a touchdown at 3:32 remaining in regulation.
At this point, the game was completely out of reach. There is no excuse for Cristobal to put Herbert at risk with such a short time, especially considering his professional potential.
Despite the supervision of the coaching staff, the Oregon medical team was able to identify Herbert's symptoms and placed him in the concussion protocol this week.
"Not being a doctor, I can never say exactly when (the concussion has occurred)," Cristobal said. "But whenever anyone seems to be successful, we will always apply the highest standard of assessment for guys to ensure that safety is at the forefront, the priority."
If Herbert can not play in UCLA, which marks the return of Chip Kelly at Autzen Stadium, Braxton Burmeister or Tyler Shough would start at quarterback for the Ducks.
Dillon Mitchell also in the concussion protocol
Herbert was not the only major player to suffer a concussion. Dillon Mitchell, the highest receiver on the team, also follows the concussion protocol.
Mitchell, who leads the team with 48 catches for 677 yards, left the game after a big hit in the third quarter.
Mitchell had six catches for 69 yards and one point before leaving the game.
Oregon dropped to 5-3 (2-3 Pac-12) with the loss.
