We have two pictures of Dwayne Johnson (Red notice with Gal Gadot currently in place by June 12 and Cruise in the jungle with Emily Blunt who just went on July 24th), Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick and the tastes of A quiet place 2 (another "possible continuation in small groups"), Godzilla vs Kong, Maleficent 2 and Minions 2. The Illumination Suite is perhaps the world's biggest coarse in the summer of 2020, but there is nothing on this list that can compete with Gal Gadot / Chris Pine / Kirsten Wiig / Pedro Pascal in North America. North, unless WW1984 shoot a Last jedi/Lost world and ends up exceeding $ 265 million.
It also gives the DC Films franchise leeway. assume Aquaman is good and Shazam is at least charming in a child-friendly way (think High sky), then WB will have these two, plus Todd Phillips' Joker movie for 2019 alongside the other big stuff (Conjuring this, Conjuring this, Godzilla 2, LEGO Movie 2, He; Chapter two, etc.) to keep them next year. And then their list of DC Movies 2020 has Cathy Yan Birds of prey (with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, among others) and now Wonder Woman 1984. This means that they have enough time to determine which of the 5,917 DC Films projects currently in development they actually want to produce.
They can treat DC Movies as an IP address or a valuable brand in a healthy studio slate (hopefully). And if these films work really well (critically and commercially), we may have to stop talking about DC Films at the end of 2020.
