Amazon has made great efforts this season to get more attention from viewers, with shows like Tom Ryan from Tom Clancy and The wonderful Mrs Maisel. The latest addition to the streaming canon has arrived this weekend. Back home Julia Roberts plays for the first time in prestige television with Heidi Bergman, a social worker who works with soldiers with PTSD in Tampa. The transition center she runs calls "Homecoming". But what seems to be an emotional therapy session is really a thriller, it's a huge end. Will there be Back home Season 2? Amazon already has it in production.
A lot like other shows such as Jack Ryan and the next the Lord of the Rings In this series, Amazon embarked on this project with the idea of making two seasons from the start, much like the fictional podcast of which it was adapted. When signing a cast like the one assembled here, which includes not only Roberts but also names such as Bobby Cannavale and Sissy Spacek, Amazon decided that it was worthwhile to guarantee two seasons to all as soon as the beginning.
The series also has a great director behind the camera: Sam Esmail, the brain behind Mr. Robot. Like his previous series, Back home Perception and timeline change throughout the first season, leading to a thrilling show. Caution: Spoilers for Back home Season 1 follow.
Back home takes place in two stages: the character of Roberts, Heidi, in the center, then the second (seen in the trailer in clips of vertical mobile phones), four years later, where Heidi works as a waitress. When asked about her stay at the center, she can not remember what she did there.
The big secret behind Back home Heidi is not part of a program that helps soldiers with PTSD adapt to civilian life. Unbeknownst to him, the transition center is a facade for a laboratory run by a government contractor, the Geist Corporation. He is experimenting to completely erase the soldiers' minds from the traumatic memories of the war so that they can be redeployed on the ground. Heidi thinks he's sending those guys home when she sends them away to die.
Heidi has spent most of the season collecting clues from the past and Heidi, in the future, to understand why she was no longer working there. The last twist is when she discovers that Geist Corporation did not do this to her at all. She did it for herself.
After spending all seasons as a couple with Walter (Stephan James), Heidi discovered the truth about his work. In response, she decided to take drastic measures. She and Walter discuss an escape plan, where she drug overdose from memory, so that the center has no choice but to send him home. She is then an overdose herself and will be free.
The problem is that neither of us remembers the other until Heidi's breakthrough. She then contacts Walter for what he meets, but he seems not to know her.
Or does it? Fans will learn next year when Amazon will come out Back home Season 2.
