DAVIE, Fla. – The defensive end of the Miami Dolphins, William Hayes, tore the ACL Sunday in an unusual way.
That's what happened while Hayes made a huge bag of thirds against the Oakland Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr, coach Adam Gase said.
"He was trying not to put weight on the quarter," said Gase. "His foot is caught in the ground."
Under the new NFL rules, a defenseman carrying his weight on a quarter after a tackle or bag incurs a penalty of 15 yards.
Gase was asked if he thought the rule change had led to Hayes' torn ACL: "I'm just telling you what happened. I'm just telling you what he did.
The San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman tweeted that Hayes' injury proves that the NFL only cares about the health of his quarters.
They do not care about the rest of us getting hurt. As long as the QB is safe https://t.co/ihjlz3lVQl

Hayes seemed to shorten his last leg – with his right leg – and tried to roll on Carr instead of landing on him. He immediately grabbed his right knee, rolling and crawling on the floor as his teammates tried to help him.
Hayes left the field with considerable pain with heavy lameness.
It's a big loss for the Dolphins, who are counting on Hayes to be one of their top scorers and their backs in rotation.
"It hurts, he's one of our leaders," Gase said. "It will be hard to swallow."
Charles Harris, Dolphins first-round pick in 2017, will play a bigger role with Hayes.
Gase confirmed Monday that injuries have been inflicted on defensive end Andre Branch (knee), linebacker Chase Allen (on foot) and tight back A.J. Derby (foot) should not end the season.
