"There is a good chance that the country 's icon and the galvanizing Democratic politician will recreate the moment later this month when Nelson will do one of a concert and a rally for O & #' s. Rourke in Austin.
While Nelson played for politicians in the past – notably for President Jimmy Carter on the South Lawn of the White House on September 13, 1980 – O'Rourke's rally will mark his first public performance on behalf of a political candidate. The concert, featuring guests Joe Ely, Carrie Rodriguez, Tameca Jones and Nelson's sons, Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson, will take place on September 29 at the Shores Auditorium.
O'Rourke, 45, who has already played in the punk group Foss with At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, made comparisons with Barack Obama for his popular campaign and his candid and energetic town halls. In July, he made a 34-day trip through Texas, visiting the state's 254 counties. Current polls put him only four points behind Republican outgoing President Ted Cruz.
"My wife Annie and I have met and talked with Beto and we share his concern about where things are going," Nelson said in a statement. "Beto embodies what is special about Texas, a completely authentic energy and integrity."
O'Rourke should speak to the crowd at the rally, which is open to the public via online registration on O'Rourke's campaign website.
