Dirk Koetter will probably have to choose Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback next week, which will make Fitzpatrick the quarterback in the near future. If he does so, Koetter could make sure he will not keep his job.
Sunday was the worst scenario for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They returned the starting quarterback position to Jameis Winston after their break of week 5, which made sense. Winston was the potential quarterback of the franchise. Fitzpatrick is a 35-year-old companion who is hot and cold. Tampa Bay had to determine what Winston could be.
Winston blew it. He threw four steals in less than three quarters on Sunday in a 37-34 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and each was a different mark – a reversal in the end zone while he had an easy pass under, a mysterious throwing in the middle of the field to anyone, a horribly inaccurate pass, and a telegraphed pick-six. This summarizes Winston's career in the NFL to date. He played well at times. But it seems he will never eliminate the few games that kill his team, which happened in a three-point loss Sunday.
Fitzpatrick has arrived and, as Fitzpatrick can be for stretching, was fantastic. He rushed for 194 yards in a little over a quarter and allowed the Buccaneers to catch up on Winston's 18-point deficit to tie the game around a minute from the end. Given that Fitzpatrick played well early in the season when Winston was suspended, it seems reasonable to believe that the Buccaneers will give him the starting post, although Koetter refused to reveal his decision after the match.
And if Fitzpatrick gets the job back, it's probably the first step in a complete reconstruction in Tampa Bay.

In the NFL, it's pretty easy to replace a losing general manager and trainer. It's not easy to trade a quarterback in which you have invested the first choice and the four seasons. Here's the problem.
At first glance, it seems foolish to believe that the Buccaneers would pay Winston, subject to the error, a huge extension of contract. But the teams are making some of their worst quarterback decisions. It's not easy to pick up quarterbacks in the NFL, especially with a very lean quarter draft class that will enter 2019. If the Buccaneers decide to cut ties with Winston, his option for the fifth year 2019 is $ 20.9 million but is not guaranteed in case of injury, what then? Living with the ups and downs of the aging Fitzpatrick (who, incidentally, only has a one year contract)? Pray that you can develop the next quarterback you write? Hoping to pay a fortune to someone like Teddy Bridgewater in free agency? Trade against another imperfect quarterback like Derek Carr? There is no good answer, and it is worth noting that Licht and Koetter probably know what will happen to them if the Buccaneers decide to eliminate Winston during the rest of the season and that Fitzpatrick does not lead a miraculous turnaround.
It is probably for this reason that Koetter did not announce the starting quarter of next week, just after the match. It's a decision that changes the franchise. It affects him too. But it seems clearer that the choice does not just depend on Winston or Fitzpatrick starting next week. It's either living with Winston's many mistakes over the next few years with a huge contract, or starting a painful and total rebuilding. That's why Sunday was worse for the Buccaneers than the mere loss of a match by a field goal in the final match. It was a hard look at an uncertain future.

While Carroll was part of a strange off-season in Seattle, it's hard to discuss the results of his coaches. Seattle, who is 4-3, still plays twice with the 49ers and Cardinals. The schedule allows them to stay in the playoff race. Given all the talent that the Seahawks have lost in the offseason, this is a very good place for them. Give Carroll a lot of credit for that.

The Raiders again lost 42-28 against the Indianapolis Colts, but that was due to a collapsed defense and a big breakaway by Doug Martin in the fourth quarter (on a terrific play from the linebacker of the Colts, Darius Leonard). Carr was the only reason the Raiders were in the game as long as they were.
Carr completed 21 of 28 passes for 244 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Carr also ran for a touchdown of one meter. His fourth touchdown, staying alive despite the hurry to find Brandon LaFell in the end zone, was fantastic. This gave the Raiders a lead of 28-21. Then the defense awarded 21 points in the fourth quarter.
It seems that Carr will not be traded before Tuesday's deadline, but that does not mean that his long-term future is settled. Presumably, Carr will have the rest of the season to impress Jon Gruden. It will be stronger with more outings like Sunday.

The Steelers' career at Bell is probably over when the season ends, but the Steelers are well prepared for that thanks to Conner. Conner had another big game, scoring 146 yards and two goals, and 66 yards in a 33-18 win over the Cleveland Browns. Assuming nothing bad happens before the start of next season, Conner will be one of the best runners in the NFL. He established himself in the future of the Steelers with his game in the absence of Bell.
We could end up with a series of Bell-esque contracts with Conner, but it will be for another day as well. What we saw in the Bell defeat is that the Steelers will not lose too much when the All-Pro will sign elsewhere.

This puts Joseph in an incredibly difficult situation. His seat is still hot in Denver. Now that the Broncos are 3 to 5, this could lead to staff movements to help the future. And Joseph will have to take what's left and try to secure his long-term future before the end of the season.

They still have road games to play in the playoffs like the Bears, Vikings and Seahawks.
The Panthers, Bears, Seahawks, Redskins and Eagles all won Sunday. These teams could all end up in the joker race. The Packers could stage a series of victories and take the NFC north or get a wild card spot, but they did not often look like the type of team that could be the result of such a result. Unless the Packers pick up the Patriots in a tough road game on Sunday night, they will face a tough task in the second half of the season.

Peterson's season is amazing. Peterson, 33, was free to sign before the Washington Redskins took it on August 20th. If the rookie, Derrius Guice, did not tear up his ACL in the pre-season, he may never have signed with a team. But Peterson had a special first half of this season. He had 149 yards rushing, including a 64-yard touchdown in Washington's 20-13 victory over the Giants. Washington is 5-2 and Peterson has transformed the identity of their offense.
Peterson seemed to have finished last season with the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals. He had some big games with Arizona, but it seemed like his last lap. During the summer, it seemed as though the five year waiting period for the Hall of Fame had begun. But he has 587 yards in seven games. It's a pace of 1,342 yards. John Riggins was 1347 yards at the age of 34 in 1983, which is the record for 33-year-olds and over. Only four backs have already won 1,000 yards after their 33rd birthday (Riggins and John Henry Johnson have done it twice, and Frank Gore and Franco Harris have done it once each). Instead of losing his retirement, Peterson writes a very unexpected chapter of his historic career.

This is not the case after what we have seen in the last two weeks. The Ravens took advantage at home against the Saints in the fourth quarter, then were repulsed by the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Panthers have a good attack, with Cam Newton in the lead, but this is not the kind of offensive that should deserve 36 points on a defense among the top five. Maybe the Ravens do not have that kind of elite defense after all.
Baltimore looked pretty good at the start of the season, aside from a strange performance on Thursday night in the second week against the Bengals. But that good start is largely swept by the Ravens sitting at 4-4, especially with the Steelers gaining ground in AFC North. The Ravens have not finished, of course, they no longer look like the potentially defensive aspirant they seemed to be for a moment.
