Winter Storm Bruce brings heavy snow to the Central Plains region of the United States, hitting some areas in or near whiteout conditions. Chicago and Kansas City are under the blizzard. And the winter climate seriously affects post-Thanksgiving trips on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year in the United States. More than 1,000 flights were canceled and more than 3,200 were delayed due to weather conditions.
Affected airports include O'Hare and Midway airports in Chicago, which is expected to have a foot of snow, and Kansas City International Airport. Delays and cancellations of related flights have also impacted many airports outside the region, including New York's LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy, canceling plans for tens of thousands of people returning home after the holidays .

Travelers and residents in areas with heavy snow are advised to exercise caution in hazardous storm conditions, such as reduced visibility, high winds and possible power outages.
It is unclear how much this will cost carriers, but a series of canceled flights like this typically cost airlines millions of dollars in passenger reimbursements and other costs associated with rescheduling and re-routing.
