Winter storm warning for Sunday. Probable dangerous journey.

A winter storm early in the season is still on track to target much of the Quad City area with heavy snow and strong winds making Sunday travel dangerous. A winter storm warning remains in effect from Sunday morning to Sunday evening for all regions.

A low pressure boost zone currently entering the Midwest tonight will continue its course to the east, bringing our first chances of rain and dawn snow on Sunday morning. A mix of rain and snow is likely as this system will continue to grow from approximately 6:00 am to 9:00 am As the morning progresses, colder air will begin to enter the system, switching all precipitation on heavy, wet snow that will continue into the afternoon.

The heavy nature of the snow, initially combined with strong winds, could create sparse power outages when branches and tree lines are stressed by increased weight. 25

The most important snowfall here in the Quad Cities will take place approximately from noon to 5 pm Snowfall of one inch or more per hour will be possible, which will create difficult travel conditions. The intensity of the snow will decrease after 18 hours the rest of the evening. Total accumulations of 6 to 9 inches with locally larger quantities are likely to expand into the heart of the Quad City metro by Sunday night. The snow will initially be heavy and wet before moving to a lighter variety that will blow much more easily as the winds increase.

As the afternoon winds down, the wind increases from northwesterly to 40 mph sometimes at frequent hours in the evening. This will create blowing and drifting problems on the west / east routes and will significantly reduce visibility for the first part of the evening until the system moves further away from the area shortly after midnight. With the end of the snow earlier in the evening and the winds diminishing from Sunday evening to Monday morning, the crews of the road should have enough time to clear many main roads for the Monday morning commute.

SUMMARY: Here is a schedule of what to expect when this storm system settles.

Trips are strongly discouraged tomorrow afternoon and evening. If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is equipped with a winter survival kit that includes these items.
