A 10-year-old Wisconsin girl was detained on Monday for first-degree murder after the murder of a baby last week.
District Attorney Wade Newell said the girl, whom NBC News did not identify, trampled the 6-month-old boy's head into a home-based daycare in Tilden City on October 30, according to affiliate of NBC, WEAU.
The girl had panicked after dropping the baby, Newell said at a hearing in the Chippewa County District Court, the station reported.
"The child hit his head against the footrest then he started crying," said Newell, according to the channel. She "did not know what to do and did not want to have any problems, then she stomped on the 6-month-old girl's head."
The boy, who was not identified by the authorities, was flown to a hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he died on November 1, said the Chippewa County Sheriff. James Kowalczyk, in a statement.
During interviews with investigators from the sheriff's office, the girl first denied having hurt, but then confessed, the statement said.
It was not immediately obvious whether the girl had a lawyer. According to WEAU, she was ordered to pay a deposit of 50,000 dollars.
