With Butler deal official, what is the next step for Thibodeau and his Wolves?

Welcome to Monday's edition of The Cooler, where it's never good to relax too long. Let's go:

* It's a kind of day with a single subject here, as I continue to examine the impact of Jimmy Butler's business nearly 48 hours after the announcement of the news.

First, the extreme short term. What is happening TODAY, when it comes to trading? Well, the agreement became official at noon when the Wolves issued a press release. The terms are exactly the ones that were reported: Butler and Justin Patton for the 76ers, with Robert Covington, Dario Saric, Jerryd Bayless and a 2022 second round pick for the Wolves.

It seems likely that head coach and basketball president Tom Thibodeau will be able to talk about the trade during the pre-match period, around 5 pm, or at least after the end of the match.

It's unclear whether Covington and Saric will be part of the Wolves for Monday's game, but that seems like a pretty tight timeline. A more likely scenario is that they are here and make their debut Wednesday against the Pelicans. (Bayless is injured and has not played this season yet).

From the news point of view, it makes sense that the Wolves are waiting to present them on Tuesday – so they are not competing with the press conference about Joe Mauer's retirement.

* Butler also will probably make his debut in Philadelphia on Wednesday. It remains to be seen how he fits into the 76ers – who, like the Wolves, are built around two young players, in this case Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons -.

Simmons said Sunday of Butler: "Obviously, he played against him once in Minnesota and at Philly, he just has a winning attitude and an aggressive side. I think he'll integrate well here. "

There is some skepticism about Butler's ability to fit into the 76ers list – not only from a cultural point of view, but from a field perspective.

* When Covington and Saric join the Wolves and start playing, it will be interesting to see how they will fit. From there, it seems that the range could be pretty good for several reasons.

First, they can both hit three points. Covington, 6-9 small forwards, and Saric, a powerful 6-10 striker, are better than 35% for long distance careers. They will help better space the ground than Butler, who could do trios but was more inclined to work from 18 feet.

Second, both bring other skills to the table. Covington was a defensive player on the first NBA team last season. Although this was the first time he has appeared at the first or second defense of the team, it is interesting to note that Butler never got better results than the honors of the second team on this listing. It goes without saying that the defense will not suffer (which would be difficult, anyway, given its seriousness).

Saric is more of the type Nemanja Bjelica – a "stretch" four who has better career rebounds than fellow Anthony Tolliver. Covington, too, rebounded well for his position.

With a few minutes for both players – I imagine that Covington starts and Saric starts or succeeds on a bench while Taj Gibson stays in training – the woeful bounce of the Wolves should improve. Wolves have spent much of this season in the NBA as a percentage of defensive rebounds. Even a slight rise in this department could be a swing of two or three possessions per game.

Covington and Saric were the main players in a 52-game winning streak last season. Both are under contract at very reasonable prices (Covington at about $ 12 million a year beyond that, while Saric earns $ 2.5 million this year and $ 3.4 million the year next).

Another advantage: Andrew Wiggins think back to the shooting guard, occupied by Butler, since Covington is a small striker. There, Wiggins will be better able to attack the basket and will be able to exploit the size differences, while his less than stellar rebound may not be such a big problem. With Wiggins ranked 6-8 and Covington 6-9, the Wolves have two long athletic wings.

The trade, however, makes a transfer of power very consumable. The wolves have Gibson, Saric, Tolliver and Gorgui Dieng. They would still like to get a contract for Dieng's contract, but Gibson and Tolliver are in the final year of their respective contracts and could get some sort of return in another exchange.

* Will this addition be subtracted in some cases? This is the interesting question. There are two conflicting notions here.

A: The wolves were better during this year-car-plus when Butler was on the field. They were 40-29 when he played and 11-15 when he did not join since joining the team.

But this 40-29 includes 3-7 this season, when his exchange request was imminent during the season. With two quality players coming in, a better bench than here a year ago and the cloud of impending exchange lifted, can the Wolves reverse their season? It's possible, but the responsibilities now lie with Karl-Anthony Towns and Wiggins. The Wolves were well below .500 when both players were their main players in the past. They have something to prove, even if Wiggins is a diplomat about certain things.

"It's not really a token on our shoulder that we can win without him. He is a good player. Each team will be better with it, "Wiggins said Sunday after training. "We must now go ahead and try to win. We dug an early hole and we have to pick it up. This should be our chip, which will make the playoffs once we are counted. "

Towns and Wiggins had their best NBA offensive season in Thibodeau's first year here, before Butler came in.

I'll tell you something I will not miss: playing Butler, playing hero ball and dribbling at the end of the game.

* And finally, the very big question: Will everything that happens will end – or quickly – sign the end for Thibodeau?

Chip Scoggins looked at the situation as a whole and rightly concluded that Thibs was on a thin ice.

Anything that does not correspond to a post-Butler renaissance is a factor of change at the end of the season. A bad pass in the next 12 games would conclude that Butler is not the only problem and prevent this decision Glen Taylor, as reported Sunday, Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN. Woj's article talks about the desperation of the last time to reach an agreement and how Taylor intervened to do so.

We finished with the Butler watch. On the next.
