Phase three is coming to an end. Soon, the characters we've become accustomed to over the past decade are going to say their final farewells. Some of them will come back for from other cinematic adventures, but it's still a swan song at the end of the day. Do not worry, though, friends: exciting times are coming. The new heroes and villains will be introduced to the long-time franchise, some of whom will probably take us by surprise. The end of an era is always sad, but Marvel's rich history and rich list of diverse characters offer a future of galactic possibilities.
For their last announcement, Kevin Feige and co. have dug deep into the chests of Marvel to bring a new group of heroes to the multiplexes in the near future. It's just – after months of teasing, The eternal is a go. Rejoice.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced the news by confirming that The CavalierS Chloé Zhao signed to lead the adventure. She will work from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, Including the scenario for the saga of the Nazi hunt Ruin at the top of the 2017 blacklist. Little is known about the story at the time of writing, but sources told THR that it would include a love story between the main characters, Ikaris and Sersi .
This is another positive initiative of Marvel, who is finally using his platform to give talented female filmmakers deserved opportunities. Millennium Films should consider doing the same. Zhao is the third woman to make a movie on MCU. She follows in the footsteps of Anna Boden and Cate Shortland, who are at the helm Captain Marvel and the first solo release of Black Widow, respectively. In addition, it continues their tendency to pick talent from the independent film world and give them a key to their successful superhero realm.
But that's not the only reason why Zhao's appointment rules. The eternals is a film in the right direction because it is the first MCU film directed by a woman who is not primarily focused on a female protagonist. Lexi Alexander directed the awesome Punisher: War Zone under the short banner of Marvel Knights, but that was not part of the current tent franchise. Women who tell stories of women are great. Women who tell stories of all kinds are even better.
For this reason alone, The eternals is an important film But what about the film itself? Why should we be excited about an adaptation of comics that nobody ever talks about? Well, the fact that Marvel is about to launch a band of forgotten mismatches into the dominant consciousness is an exciting aspect. Once again, the studio showed that it was more than willing to give obscure characters a chance to shine alongside their famous pillars. Who does not like an underdog story?
The original comic series was created by Jack Kirby. After returning to Marvel in the 1970s after a stint at DC, he was obsessed with cosmic concepts and Greek mythology. The Eternals – a breed of genetically superior beings that were created by powerful entities called The Celestials – were a byproduct of his fascinations. Unfortunately, cool concepts do not always sell comics.
When Kirby created the characters, he considered them as autonomous entities without a clear connection to the rest of the Marvel universe. In the years that followed, other creators came and integrated the Eternals into an overview. I do not know how Kirby would feel about their inclusion in the MCU, but I suspect the studio will want them to partner with Spidey et al.
We know that the Eternals is planned for months, but this confirmation is comforting. Iron Man, Spider Man, Cape Town and other key players played a crucial role in the success of the MCU, of course. But none of us expected the Guardians, Dr. Strange, and Ant-Man to get their own big boys, let alone that they would succeed.
The Marvel brand is powerful enough to sell today. They can afford to take these chances and for a long time they can continue to resurrect obscure pleasures. Now, what shoes do we need to shine to get this NFL Superpro movie which the world does not yet know it needs?
