BOSTON – A popular pizza chain in New England has abruptly closed many places, including three in Worcester.
Bosses and workers at Papa Gino's offices tweeted Sunday about the surprise closures, which included several sites in Worcester, the Boston area, and neighboring New Hampshire.
The Dedham-based company had previously said it had 150 stores. As of Sunday, his website listed only 97 locations.
The company did not officially release the complete list of closures and a company spokesperson did not immediately comment.
At the Auburn restaurant, the store manager told the reporter not to comment on the closures and directed a reporter to Papa Gino's website to determine if a store was still open.
On Webster Square, a note on the door informed customers that the location was now closed and offered a discount code for other locations. Inside, the tables were always equipped with salt and pepper shakers and ads offering a 30% discount if you enrolled in a rewards program.
Papa Gino, at 645 Chandler Street, also had a sign Sunday afternoon at the door: "This place is now closed, thank you for your sponsorship."
Papa Gino at Southwest Cutoff has also been closed.
Papa Gino has several restaurants in central Massachusetts, including one in Holden and others in Worcester, which remained open.
Papa Gino's was founded in 1961 in Boston, under the name of Piece O 'Pizza. He changed his name to become Papa Gino's in 1968 and spread to Boston, to other parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
The company also owns Angelo's grilled sandwiches, one of which closed earlier this year at Webster. At Angelo's on Park Avenue in Worcester also closed last year. Clients reported that Angelo also had placards stating that they were permanently closed on Sunday.
