CHICAGO, IL – An explosion in the Metra railroad on the northwestern side of Chicago has seriously injured two workers, and one of them is dead. Workers were doing welding work on the tracks around 11:45 am Saturday in block 4500 of West Byron Street when the explosion occurred, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.
"They were there to do maintenance work that involved welding and there was some kind of explosion," said Reile. "Both men were seriously injured."
She could not immediately confirm that one person had been killed, but the Chicago Tribune announced that one of them, a man, had been declared dead at the time. hospital just after noon. The second was in critical condition, the newspaper said.
The scene was secured soon after and at least one train was delayed. The cause of the explosion remains in the study.
Old Irving Park is about 7 miles north of downtown.
A voice message left by the Chicago Fire Department was not immediately returned.
