AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – The International Court of Justice said Friday that it had received a complaint from the "State of Palestine" against the United States, arguing that the US government's placement of its Israeli embassy in Jerusalem violated an international treaty. removed.
The ICJ, known as the World Court, said in a statement that Palestine asserts that the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations obliges a country to set up its embassy on the territory of a host country. While Israel militarily controls Jerusalem, its property is disputed.
In December, US President Donald Trump ordered that the US embassy in Israel be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and that the new embassy be opened in May.
The Palestinian lawsuit asks the court "to order the United States of America to withdraw (their) diplomatic mission from the holy city of Jerusalem".
The ICJ is the United Nations place for the settlement of disputes between nations. Palestine was recognized by the US General Assembly in 2012 as a non-member observer state, although its statehood is recognized neither by Israel nor by the United States .
