World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the growing health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the adoption of United Nations Resolution 61/225. It is celebrated annually on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1922. World Diabetes Day is the largest awareness campaign in the world. Diabetes on a global scale, reaching one billion people in more than 160 countries. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the world of diabetes and firmly keeps diabetes at the forefront of public and political debate. The Regional Aging Agency, Region 9, is proud to celebrate World Diabetes Day on behalf of all people with diabetes in our region and around the world.
