WWE is offering a pay-per-view payment in Australia for the first time since 2002, at the WWE Super Showdown on Saturday, October 6th. It is not only unusual for WWE to host a pay-per-view event on Saturday, due to: jet lag, the show will start extremely early in the morning on the East Coast and the United States. The 10-game card will start at 5 pm (ET) and will be broadcast live worldwide on the WWE network.
Triple H, The Undertaker, John Cena, Ronda Rousey and The Bella Twins are some of the most notorious cross-show names. Shawn Michaels and Kane will also play alongside Triple H and Taker in their singles match, which should find a place in the main event. Elsewhere on the map are personalities such as The Shield, AJ Styles, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and New Day.
CBS Sports will be with you throughout the day Saturday morning to update this story with the latest results, scans, ratings and highlights of the show. Stay with us throughout the day as we will provide you with a complete summary with notes after the show.
WWE Super Showdown Summary, grades
These will be provided offline due to the time difference between those in the United States.
SmackDown Tag Team Championship – The new day (c) def. The bar via pinfall to keep the titles: An awesome way to open the show with upcoming fan-favorites to keep the straps. Although the match was not long and there was never a time when it was thought that the bar could win the titles, it was filled with 39, action all along. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston teamed up for a double dagger on the back of the top rope to win the 1-2-3. Category B-
SmackDown Women's Championship – Charlotte Flair def. Becky Lynch (c) by disqualification: The crowd was firmly in Lynch's camp throughout this match and she certainly started as an aggressor. Flair came out of an early attempt at Dis-Arm-Her and finally hit a pair of spears on Lynch, which resulted in no fall. Late in the game, Lynch used a typical heel tactic and decided to leave the ring, grab his title and head back. However, Flair stopped her and brought Lynch back to the ring with the title hanging on the apron. Moments later, when Flair locked Lynch in figure eight, the champion grabbed her title and sent it to Flair. Flair tried to attack Lynch after the match in revenge, but Lynch looked away and hit Flair with the suplex Beck-Sploder and walked away. Category B
John Cena and Bobby Lashley def. Elias and Kevin Owens via a draft: You know exactly how it went. Elias and Owens opened the microphone in the middle of the ring before Lashley, then Cena became thinner. After a short offensive attack on the heels, Lashley and Cena took over. Cena finally touched his attitude adjustment and his new "sixth hit on Doom" – back to head – for the 1-2-3 on Elias. Grade: D
The IIconics def. Asuka and Naomi via a pinfall: The local team received an enthusiastic ovation from the fans as it came to light as it immediately became apparent that The IIconics was disappearing. Once they managed to pull Asuka out of the ring and drop it outside, Peyton Royce hit a big boot on Naomi, who was raised by Billie Kaye, for the win. Grade: D +
WWE Championship – AJ Styles (c) def. Samoa Joe via submission to retain the title (No Disqualification, No Countout): This one was a barn burner. Styles and Joe got into the lobby and started fighting outside the ring before the match started. There was a perfect combination of wrestling in the ring and brutality. Joe was the first to introduce a weapon taking Styles with a uranage through a steel chair, but Styles recovered and toppled Joe on a table that the challenger had installed in the ring. It was at this point that Joe started selling an injured knee, which Styles attacked until the end of the match. Two attempts to submit Styles via Coquina Clutch were unsuccessful by Joe, who also tried to lose his long lost Muscle Buster before his knee gave up. The two men then returned to hell in a cell with the same combination of Coquina Clutch pins, but Joe was deported. Styles immediately locked himself into the veal grinder and, just as Joe was looking for the rope, his injured leg dropped, so he tapped it. That's all we wanted in a match between those two and, although there was room to go to another level, it's hard to complain about the quality of the fight and of the story told. Grade: A
Ronda Rousey and the Bella Twins def. The Riott team via submission: Rousey has received a prominent entry into the same city where his unbeaten streak has ended. After the Bellas stepped aside and focused on Rousey, the champion and Nikki Bella battled over who should start the game. As a nod to the fans, Liv Morgan threw Brie Bella in the face when they were together. The Riott team spent most of the match holding the Bellas out of Rousey's identity, who finally got the hot tag and cleaned the house with arm handles, hips, sweeps, strikes and suplexes. Rousey had Sarah Logan isolated for the armband, but Morgan separated him; while they were trying to overtake her, Rousey grabbed their arms, knocked over the two women and locked them in a double cross cuff for submission. The match was well organized, all things considered, and the finish was certainly fun. A lot of credit here for a match that has delivered too much. Category B-
Cruiserweight Championship – Buddy Murphy def. Cedric Alexander (c) via pinfall to win the title: Although some wrestlers did not announce their home town (like The IIconics earlier), the WWE made it clear that Murphy was a Melbourne product on his way to the ring. He received a strong reaction when he arrived in the ring with the Australian flag but still played the heel disrespectful to Alexander with a false handshake to start the game. From the beginning, the pace was hot with Murphy, who made several movements in height but could only get two points. Alexander knocked out the crowd with a Michinoku driver of the upper rope and a flatliner crossing the ropes, but he was not able to profit from a fall. A seated electric bomb from Murphy gave him a 2.8, so Alexander quickly responded by picking up a Spanish Fly and his Lumbar check standing, but was shocked when Murphy was expelled to 2.9. Murphy reacted by catching an Alexander in flight with one knee and hitting his opponent from Murphy's Law Law for the 1-2-3, becoming the first Australian to hold a singles title in the history of the WWE. Grade: A
The shield def. Braun Strowman, Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre via Pinfall: The Shield entered the crowd with a mask resembling Bane and dominated the first half of the match; However, as they tried to get Strowman to the ads table with their signature triple bomb, opponents thwarted the move and took advantage of it, isolating Rollins for much of the match. After his teammates eliminated the rest of the shield, Strowman actually climbed the top rope and attempted a splash on a rollins lying down, just out of the way as expected. This allowed Rollins to score Ambrose, who was cleaning the house a bit, but McIntyre had seized it. Reigns eventually got the medal and tried to hit the Superman Punch on McIntyre, but he moved and Reigns pinned Ambrose with her, knocking out his teammate from the ring deck shield. Reigns then avoided a Strowman in the race, who went through the turnbuckles and hit the Superman Punch on McIntyre just to get him out of the ring. With Reigns and Rollins in the ring, the four camps were surrounded by their competitors and Ambrose. It seemed that Ambrose could attack Reigns and Rollins, but he instead accused Strowman. With McIntyre the legal man and everyone on the outside, the Shield is prepared to hit the triple power bomb just for Strowman to launch the four men and knock everyone out.
Strowman then attacked Reigns and Rollins on the shoulder outside the ring and called Ambrose outside after Ambrose had been kicked out of Ziggler's Zig-Zag. But as Strowman charged Ambrose down, Reigns popped out of nowhere to throw Strowman through the ring fence and into the crowd. Ziggler and McIntyre then dragged Ambrose into the ring as a finisher, but Rollins kicked McIntyre off the ring and Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds on Ziggler for a brace. The match left a lot to be desired and sometimes dragged, but the finish was electric and well reserved, Ambrose getting the big moment. Category B-
Daniel Bryan def. Miz via pinfall becomes number one for WWE champion title: Miz attempted to make a promo to open the match, but Bryan's music interrupted him before he could speak. Shortly after the start of the match, Miz attempted to beat Bryan with his own knee, but without success. Miz then tried his overwhelming final, but Bryan reversed it into an inner cradle for the 1-2-3. It seemed that Miz's left shoulder was up at the end and the crowd was absolutely shocked that the fight ended at 2:25. Bryan did not react much when Miz criticized the referee afterwards. That said, it's decent that Bryan's only victory over Miz is this way, as it keeps Miz angry and forces him to interfere in the next title match by keeping the feud. Grade: D +
Triple H (with Shawn Michaels) against The Undertaker (with Kane): The match began with a surprise announcement that it would be challenged according to non-disqualification rules. Triple H and Taker agreed and proved how familiar they were with the tee shot. Taker tried to go to Old School only for Triple H to dissect him and try it himself before Taker finally hit him. Michaels got involved early as the competitors were out of the ring, sending Taker to the ring and helping Triple H prepare the set. Kane tried to stop him but the referee moved him away inexplicably. The fighters then entered the crowd with Triple H taking a number of big bumps. Michaels was both a friend and coach throughout the match, whispering often in Triple H 's ear when the opportunity arose. Taker later responded to the previous intervention by hitting Michaels away from the action. As Taker set Triple H on the table, Michaels tried to get into the ring apron before being thrown by Taker. Triple H used a steel chair to prevent Taker from diving out of the ring, but while he was going to hit again, Kane dragged him out of the circle. Michaels then hit Sweet Chin Music on Kane, placing him at the top of the table before Triple H left the ring apron with a nudge to knock out Kane.
When Triple H re-entered the ring with the chair, Taker caught it with a chokeslam, then the Tombstone Piledriver, but Triple H was eliminated at 2.9. At this point, Taker knocked out referee Mike Chioda – presumably on his behalf – took a steel chair and hit Triple H with it several times while he was asking Michael to watch. Taker then placed Triple H's head in the chair, so Michaels jumped to the apron and begged him. Once Taker turned his back, Michaels tried to get involved but Taker hit him. Triple H responded with a spinebuster and shortly after a pedigree. With a new referee in the ring, Triple H also got a score of 2.9, which the crowd was expecting because she did not react.
