Wyoming hunting guide mutilated by grizzly bears

A Wyoming hunting guide was fatally wounded and his client was injured when two grizzlies attacked them on Friday, officials said.

The authorities later euthanized two grizzlies, a mother and a cub, who, according to USA Today, killed guide Mark Uptain and injured his client, Corey Chubon, near the border between Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

"All the available evidence indicates that these two bears were the bears involved in the attack on Terrace Mountain," said Wyoming Game and Fish Department spokeswoman Rebekah Fitzgerald on Sunday.

Uptan and Chubon were attacked by bears while carrying the elk they shot on Thursday, but were only able to return on Friday, officials said. The bears "aggressively accused" the men and did not touch the dead elk, said Teton County officials.

The deadly incident came weeks after the federal judge arrested plans for Wyoming state officials to hold a grizzly bear hunt this month, according to USA Today. The hunt was suspended until 1 October.

"I can only imagine how horrible it was," said Sy Gilliland, hunting guide and spokesperson for grizzly bear hunters in the area. "You have a bear population that is essentially unchallenged, is an advanced predator, and is not afraid of humans."

Upton was the father of five children, the authorities said. A GoFundMe page has been launched to help his family.

"I've been Sarah's best friend (Uptain's wife) since Grade 2, so we've had a lot of life together," said Rauli Perry, a friend of the family. "I know I can not take away the pain, but if we can help Sarah to be able to focus on the kids and not worry about finances."
