In a classic slugfest where both men were beaten and bloodied, Yair Rodriguez knocked out Chan Sung Jung with an uppercut elbow that almost landed by accident – there was only one second left in a 25-minute fight.
Jung (14-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) was left cold on the canvas while Rodriguez (11-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) sank on the mat, exhausted. Rodriguez's elbow fell in the last seconds of snowflakes of both fighters, a few seconds after the two celebrated together for what they presumed to be the winner of the "Fight of the Night".
The fight against featherweight was the main event of the UFC Fight Night 136 show at Pepsi Center in Denver. It aired on FS1 after the preliminary matches of FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Rodriguez opened with a kick, then another before Jung retaliated. Jung rushed inside and tried to put a right hand. The two men exchanged kicks inside the leg, and 90 seconds in Jung were released with a burst of uppercuts cups covered by Rodriguez. When Jung kicked his leg, Rodriguez landed against his left hand. But soon after, Jung had a big punch and tried to develop it.
The kick-boxing match continued in the second with each brief acceleration of hunter trade. Halfway through, Jung pushed Rodriguez's head back with a combo, but Rodriguez landed hard. Jung worked through and tackled Rodriguez against the fence. Rodriguez, however, ignored Jung's attempt to withdraw and returned to the center of the cage.
A magnificent jumping kick and a knee followed seemed pleasant to Rodriguez, even if they had not landed. But another nudge did not wait in the last seconds and Jung was cut around the mouth and nose.
Jung still managed to keep moving forward in the third, while he ate a lot of punches and kicks from Rodriguez. He had a good time, but it was more of a game than Rodriguez's offense. 75 seconds from the end, Rodriguez kicked his leg hard, but Jung caught him and briefly took him off. Rodriguez tried and missed, which gave Jung the opportunity to catch some late shots.
In the fourth, both fighters were bloodied. They exchanged blows and hooks so that the blood flows from their faces. They took turns to take shots and, two minutes from the end of the round, Jung put a big right hand that sent Rodriguez back.
The two players continued their exchanges during the finals and went midway for what they knew they needed to win a $ 50,000 bonus for "Fight of the Night". Two minutes from the end, Jung completed the loop with Rodriguez. punch, but he was just back up. While the fight may have been in play at the last minute, Rodriguez got a kick back, but Jung followed with a combination that supported Rodriguez.
At 12 seconds from the end, the two men looked at each other and celebrated their fight again. Then they decided to throw themselves for the last few seconds – and Rodriguez elbowed with a second – a nudge that seemed almost accidental. He landed the color on Jung's chin and Jung was cold.
And instead of the fight making a decision, Rodriguez was a knockout winner – miraculously.
Rodriguez returned to the winning streak in his first fight in 18 months. He has won nine of his last 10 races. Jung is back in the losing round and has lost two of his last three.
