Yankees Didi Gregorius rushed from first base to score the winning race. While Hicks' double dribbled along the wall and in the left corner, Gregorius rounded to bring home. He plunged head first into the house, beating a throw from outfielder D.J. Stewart.
New York has earned its third playoff run since 2015. Saturday's win, paired with the Rays' defeat by the Blue Jays, ensured the Yankees will reach the playoffs for the 54th time, the highest level in history. History of the MLB.
New York has 27 World Series titles and 40 AL flags, the two oldest in the history of the league.
The Yankees join the Red Sox (East Eastern Champions), Indians (AL Central Champions) and Astros (Playoff wins) as three other clubs in the American League . The Athletics led the Rays by seven games for last place in the playoffs.
The Yankees also scored history earlier in the game. Hicks completed a second home run, scoring the club's 250th place this season and making New York the sixth MLB history team to reach 250 or more circuits in a single season.
