BOSTON (AP) – The Bronx Bombers have earned their nickname by hitting another big number. A couple of them, actually.

Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton connected while the Yankees in the playoff final set the major league record for most home runs in a season, beating the Boston Red Sox 8-5 on Saturday for their 100th win this year.

"I'm happy for them, they work very hard on their job, and that's the result of the success of many people," said manager Aaron Boone.

The Yankees finished Saturday tied with the 1997 Seattle Mariners – a squad that included Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez – with 264 homesteads after hitting four Friday night in an 11-6 win over Boston.

Torres scored two points in the fourth inning, allowing the Yankees to set the all-time record, and Stanton added to his record with his 38th of the season in the seventh.

"Our team did a lot of interesting things today, so it was a good day," said Stanton, who also picked up a single in the first round and reached 100 points in his first season in New York.

The Yankees have an additional chance to add to Sunday's record as they attempt to complete a three-game series against the AL East Reds, which they could see next week in the playoffs.

New York became the first team to get at least 20 home runs of nine places in the kicking order.

"I did not even know it before the match, my meeting with the broadcast team," said Boone. "In fact, when Gleyber hit, I was sharing all this information with all the guys on the bench because I had the impression of having this new knowledge."

The Yankees, who will host Oakland in the AL Series game on Wednesday, improved to 100-61 – leaving them far behind the Red Sox, who set a franchise record of 107-54.

This is the tenth time in league history that a team has won at least 100 games and has not finished first. Since the start of the division in 1969, the only clubs that have not been leading despite three-figure wins have been Oakland in 2001 – which won 102 games against 116 in San Francisco in 1993 and Baltimore in 1980 .

The Yankees have joined Boston and Houston to win 100 or more wins this season, making AL the first league to have a trio of teams with 100 wins the same year.

New York has won 100 wins for the 20th time in franchise history and the first since 103-59 in 2009, when the Yankees won their most recent World Series title.

Brock Holt hit a two-point homer in the ninth for the Red Sox, which could host the Yankees in the AL division series from the week. Wild-card winner opens Friday to Friday at Fenway Park.

Manager Alex Cora, who beat the lineup and resting players for the playoffs, was not too worried after Saturday's loss.

"We are going to be 0-0 next week, we will still have four days off," said Cora. "It's not that we follow the movements, we take care of our players and we make sure they get what they need, we'll be ready for October."

Lance Lynn (10-10) won with three innings of relief, retaining Boston twice. Aroldis Chapman ended the ninth inning of Boston for his 32nd victory.

Eduardo Rodriguez (12-5) threw the third and fourth for Boston and took the defeat, allowing three runs on four hits.

After Greg Bird's RBI double earned New York a 2-1 lead in the fourth, Torres hit Rodriguez's 1-1 throw to the right, passing Blake Swihart's head to the wall and giving the Yankees the record of 265.

Andujar drove twice on a double in the fifth round of New York and Stanton started the seventh round with a Steven Wright circuit.

RETURN ATCHA!

Stanton pushed the track record to 266 with a push to the left field and then had a surprise. A fan with powerful arms sitting in the seats above the green monster made the memory, and the ball bounced on Stanton as he rounded the second base.

Boston fans cheered when the fan unleashed and Stanton smiled when the shot hit him. Stanton hastily saluted the man.

"I would not have thought it would happen so quickly with a fan who threw it in. I've never seen it before," Stanton said.

RECORDING OF ROOKIE

The home run record was not the only one to fall. Miguel Andujar hit two doubles and increased his total to 46, the most by a Yankees rookie since Joe DiMaggio hit 44 in 1936.

TRAINER ROOM

Yankees: RF Aaron Judge, whose eighth inning Friday night tied the Yankees with the Mariners' record, had come out of the lineup after hitting the right field wall during a take. Boone said the Yankees were cautious with the judge, who returned from the disabled list on Sept. 14 with a broken wrist. "I think it's a good day to bring it down because we worked very hard with him," Boone said.

Red Sox: RF Mookie Betts was not in the mix. Cora stated that Betts had a day off and was not injured.

FOLLOWING

Yankees: Luis Severino, RHP star player (19-8, 3.39 ERA), had been registered Sunday, but was scratched. It remains an option to launch in the game of joker.

Red Sox: Rick Porcello (17-7, 4.33 ERA) is expected to throw a few innings in the final game of the regular season while Boston leaves his rotation to ALDS.
