You can now add YouTube to your list of sites to search for free streaming movies, with the video-sharing giant adding free, ad-supported movies to YouTube Movies.
A spokesperson for Google, the parent company of YouTube, told Gizmodo that she had introduced the "Free Watch" section on her site in October. The company has declined to specify how often you watch ads when you watch videos, but Verge said YouTube's commercial advertiser pop-ups "appear at regular intervals."
The Google spokesman told Gizmodo that the movies came from his partnerships with major Hollywood studios, and honestly, the list of free videos to watch is really great! Some of the most notable titles include Igor, a lot of Rocky movies, The terminator, Checked in, and Hackers. Do not expect to see anything super new, but the selection (to date) presents a mix of successful blockbusters and cult favorites.
Rohit Dhawan, director of product management at YouTube, told Age Age that free, ad-supported movies were a good opportunity for users and advertisers, which makes sense because they want their ads to be quality. By age of announcement:
Ultimately, advertisers could find a way to pay for sponsoring individual films, giving users free views and exclusive screenings, says Dhawan. However, it all depends on how the studios evolve their business to reflect these new digital streaming windows that are opening up.
It may not compete with Hulu yet, but according to Dhawan, the company plans to expand its selection of free feature films. (That's good to hear because his horror selection – or lack thereof – may require some work.)
