Joe Goldberg will do everything for the love, and he proved it in the first set of YOU about life. In the opening hour of the show, Joe (played by Penn Badgley), a bookseller from New York, met and quickly became infatuated with a young woman named Beck (Elizabeth Lail). During the episode, Joe went from Beck's social media research to stealing his phone to knock out Beck's boyfriend, Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci), and locking him up in the soundproofed basement of the book store. As for the crushes, Joe went from mild to scary in 60 minutes.

For those who have read the 2014 Caroline Kepnes book on which the series is based, it might be a bit surprising that Joe is showing this side of himself so early in the series. But Sera Gamble, the showrunner, said it was necessary to move forward in introducing Joe's darker side when adapting the book to the screen. "Something important for [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] and from the beginning, we really needed you to know who Joe was at the end of the first episode, "says Gamble. "We did not think you could get a complete picture of Joe Goldberg by seeing him only as an attentive bookseller, or even just seeing him as a guy who could get into his apartment. We knew that it was quite necessary to present him as someone capable of this kind of violence. "

And yet, Joe did not kill Benji. Rather, the last moments of the episode revealed that Benji was still breathing. "I think it's really the moment where you understand who Joe Goldberg is and who he is since the first picture of the pilot project," says Gamble.

This turn will also lead to more screen time for Benji, as Joe now needs to determine what his next decision should be. "Lou Taylor Pucci gets a stunt performance, where he basically experiences the entire gamut of human emotions while he's in that cage," Gamble says about the actor. "[Benji] is deceptively light and cozy when you first meet it, but this experience weakens Benji in his components. We knew we needed an actor capable of a really intense and serious character work.
