Joe Elsasser, president of Covisum, provider of social security synchronization software, told CNBC earlier that retirees who have recently chosen to receive Social Security benefits could see a "real increase" in their monthly checks.

For those who are receiving an average social security benefit of about $ 1,400, the cost of living adjustment in 2019 will rise to $ 39 a month.

Medicare Part B premiums for next year have not been announced yet. These premiums are estimated at $ 135.50 in 2019 for those with incomes below $ 85,000.

In the past, the adjustment resulting from the cost of living of Social Security had been amortized by the increase in Medicare premiums.

That should not happen to as many people this year as in 2018, according to Mary Johnson, Social Security Policy Analyst and Health Insurance at the Senior Citizens League.

People receiving social security benefits of between $ 600 and $ 634 could be the most affected.

"This group will likely see their Part B bonus take over all their COLA in 2019," said Johnson.

According to Johnson, the number of social security recipients receiving benefits of this type is about 5 million, although not all of them are necessarily enrolled in Medicare.
