Forty-seven people were killed in Zimbabwe when two buses collided on a road between the capital Harare and the city of Rusape in the east of the country.

"We confirm that 47 people died in a road accident on a 166 km anchorage along the Harare-Mutare highway," said police spokesman Paul Nyathi.

On Twitter, the government newspaper Herald said that the photos of the scene were too graphic to be posted.

The newspaper said that the mortuary of the local public hospital in Rusape had run out of space and had asked for the help of a private funeral parlor to receive some of the bodies.

Road crashes are common in Zimbabwe, where roads are riddled with potholes due to years of underfunding and neglect, but the road on which the accident occurs is produced had recently been covered.

Last June, 43 people were killed in a bus crash in the north of the country, along the road to neighboring Zambia.

Deputy Minister of Transport Fortune Chasi said the government would take action to reduce the carnage.

"Loss of lives totally useless. This event should be the last before severe measures are taken, "he tweeted promising to control public service vehicles and their owners.
