HARARE, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe has embarked on a massive vaccination campaign as it faces a cholera outbreak that has killed at least 49 people.

Health Minister Obadiah Moyo said the vaccination campaign, with the help of the World Health Organization, would target more than 500,000 people between Wednesday and Sunday. Moyo says that nearly one million more people will be vaccinated starting next week.

The government said the epidemic had sickened more than 9,000 people, mainly in the capital, Harare, since September.

Many fear that 2008 will reoccur, with cholera killing more than 4,000 people at the height of the country's economic and political problems in southern Africa.

Water and sewer infrastructure collapsed, with untreated sewage flowing freely in some streets of Harare.

The recently elected President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, vowed to fight the "medieval" disease.
