Staff expressed outrage at the decision by a senior global policy official to back Brett Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court candidate, at his hearing last week, he told reporters, according to sources close to folder.
Employees directly approached the issue with CEO Mark Zuckerberg as part of his weekly Q & A session last Friday. Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg also discussed the controversy in an internal thread that has so far generated hundreds of comments.
Mr. Zuckerberg said on Friday that he would not have made the same decision, but that his appearance did not violate Facebook's rules.

Employees began expressing anger, confusion and frustration after Joel Kaplan, Facebook's Global Policy Officer, appeared in the middle of Judge Kavanaugh's lengthy hearing last Thursday. Over the past week, the subject has sparked hundreds of comments in internal discussions, say the regulars of the discussion.
"I explained to Joel why I think it was a mistake on her part given her role in society," Sandberg wrote, according to a copy of the Wall Street Journal's message. "We support the right of people to do what they want in their personal time, but it was not in any case a simple case."
Mr. Kaplan is a close friend of Judge Kavanaugh.
Facebook plans to hold a public meeting with senior executives, including Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Sandberg, to hear and address employees' concerns Friday, said people close to the company .
