The United States Women’s National Team was eliminated from the Olympic gold medal race after losing 1-0 to Canada in the semifinals on Monday.

Jessie Fleming’s second-half penalty was enough to see Canada stun the reigning world champions.

The USWNT no longer reached the final of the back-to-back Olympics after losing to Sweden in the quarter-finals at Rio 2016.

Vlatko Andonovsky’s side will now play the bronze medal match on Thursday.

The USWNT suffered a major setback in a suspicious first half when goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was forced out with a knee injury after 30 minutes.

They performed better in the second half and forced Canadian goaltender Stephanie Labbe to make good saves from Carli Lloyd and Julie Ertz.

But with 15 minutes to go, Canada got a penalty kick via VAR after Tierna Davidson fouled Deanne Rose in the box.

Fleming converted his free kick and although Lloyd hit the crossbar late, Canada held on to win the game.

Canada will face Australia or Sweden in the gold medal match at Tokyo Olympic Stadium on Friday.

The USWNT had a tough tournament, starting with a 3-0 loss to Sweden that ended a 44-game unbeaten streak, and a scoreless draw against Australia in the group stage.
