USA win three of four foursome matches, lead Ryder Cup 9-3

SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin – The zest that brings the Ryder Cup to life returned in a few notable instances on Saturday, ramping up the intensity and causing some stormy reactions.

But the result was pretty much the same.

Europe were looking to close the gap at Whistling Straits, but in the end, they only won one of the foursome matches and saw their deficit widen by two more points, making what was already an even bigger gap. crucial afternoon session.

With 12 of 28 points decided, the United States leads 9-3, with Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia’s side scoring the lone point for the Europeans. And even they had to overcome a three-hole deficit to secure the victory over Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger.

“We need more,” Garcia said. “What we have done is not enough. Not in the situation we find ourselves in.”

The United States won the session 3-1 for the third time in a row to extend their lead to six points. With 16 points remaining, Europe must win 11 to forge a 14-14 tie and retain the Ryder Cup. The six-point lead in three sessions is the biggest for either side since the Americans dominated Great Britain and Ireland in 1975.

“This is obviously very important,” said Dustin Johnson, 37, the oldest member of the United States team and the one with the most experience in his fifth Ryder Cup. “Even though we had a nice lead after yesterday, played really well, there are still eight points left today. You have to come out and have a good start. We’re just trying to win every session and keep that lead.”

Each game has reached at least the 17th hole. But outside of the first game, the Europeans couldn’t beat the Americans to get the shot they needed.

That’s not to say the session lacked entertainment. Justin Thomas and Koepka made sure of that.

Thomas interrogated a short putt which he was forced to pierce upon seeing if it was in the leather – the typical sign that it is a donation. Meanwhile, Koepka heated up over a rules issue, using a curse to scold the two officials who wouldn’t give him relief on the 15th hole.

It didn’t matter.

For a while, it appeared that Europe could reduce the advantage. When Rahm and Garcia rallied, the teams of Viktor Hovland / Bernd Wiesberger and Lee Westwood / Matt Fitzpatrick were good in their games.

But they couldn’t hang on. Jordan Spieth and Thomas rallied to pass Hovland and Wiesberger, coming back from 3 points to lead on the 15th hole for the first time en route to a 2 point victory.

With Spieth’s victory, that means the 12 Americans have contributed at least half a point. Spieth and Thomas are now 4-2 in the Ryder Cup all-time team.

In the final game, Xander Sc Chaudele and Patrick Cantlay turned an early deficit into a 3 out of 11 hole lead before securing a 2-1 victory. ScHotele, a Ryder Cup rookie, is 3-0.

The afternoon’s four-ball game will see Tony Finau and Harris English take on Shane Lowry and Hatton at 1:26 pm ET, followed by Koepka and Spieth against Rahm and Garcia at 1:42 am The third game is Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie. Scheffler vs. Tommy Fleetwood and Hovland. The final game on Saturday will pit Johnson and Morikawa against Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

Thomas, Berger, Cantlay and ScHotele are seated for the United States, which means only Johnson will play all five games.

For Europe, Casey, Wiesberger, Fitzpatrick and Westwood will skip the afternoon session. This means that Rahm and Hovland will be the only players to participate in each session for Europe.
