Utah Jazz sign Hassan Whiteside

The Utah Jazz made another addition to the list at Hassan Whiteside.

The exact numbers have not been revealed, but it will likely be on a minimum deal. This solidifies Utah’s position as a backup center following the departure of Derrick Favors.

In all fairness, it’s a surprising move that few jazz fans probably expected. Although maybe they should have. In 36 games last season, Whiteside posted a line of 8.3 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field. It also included 1.3 blocks in 15.2 minutes per game.

The problem with Whiteside is that it displays some pretty garish numbers due to its size and length, and you can’t argue with its ability to block shots. The question has always been whether he’s a good defender who gets a lot of blocked shots? In the Jazz system, we will certainly know that. For a player who is good at blocking shots, the Jazz’s system could be perfect, especially in a backup role.

The other thing always talked about with Whiteside is how much he was making. When he was making a ton of money, it was always too much for the results you were actually getting. Although on a veteran’s minimum wage, it is well worth it.

After watching Whiteside and Rudy Gobert go there for years, it will be interesting to see them team up. The central position of Jazz is now absolutely stacked with the size of Gobert at Whiteside at Udoka Azubuike. There isn’t a single guy who can’t come in and block the shots. It should be fun to watch.
