Amazon chose not to order a second season of Utopia, his direct serial adaptation of the British drama, written by Missing girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn. The series, starring John Cusack, Sasha Lane, and Rainn Wilson, premiered on September 25 to poor reviews and proceeded quietly.
Utopia follows a group of young adults who meet online and are ruthlessly hunted down by a deep and dark state organization after taking possession of an almost mythical cult underground graphic novel. In the pages of the comics, they learn about conspiracy theories that may actually be real and are forced to find themselves in the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.
The Amazon adaptation was a co-production between Endemol Shine North America / Kudos and Amazon Studios. Executive producers alongside Flynn were Jessica Rhoades, Sharon Hall, Karen Wilson and Dennis Kelly.
An American version of the 2013-14 British series Utopia, Created by Dennis Kelly and produced by UK production studio Kudos of the Endemol Shine group, was previously in the works at HBO in 2015 with David Fincher and Flynn. (Fincher, who was originally attached to direct and executive production, hired Flynn to write the series after working with her on the feature film.
