Gillian Flynn’s long-running pandemic drama lasted a season.
Utopia is not so utopian.
Amazon canceled its Gillian Flynn-produced drama series after one season, ending what was an over six-year trip to the screen.
Originally developed and repeated directly in the series in 2014 at HBO with David Fincher bringing his Missing girl Contributor Flynn, the drama about a group of comic book fans who stumble upon a deadly pandemic landed on Amazon four years later. Flynn made a global deal with HBO and uploaded it to Amazon with Utopia, if Fincher was no longer attached.
Amazon, like other streamers, does not publish traditional audience data. The drama did not receive warm reviews when it launched on September 25. The series has a 51 percent review rating on RottenTomatoes.com and, perhaps a sign of a cut short, does not have an audience score. In his review, THR TV critic Inkoo Kang called Utopia “Too hackneyed to be timely, too dark to escape.”
John Cusack starred in the nine-episode remake of Dennis Kelly’s British series of the same name. The cast included Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Ashleigh LaThrop, Desmin Borges, Farrah Mackenzie and Christopher Denham. Utopia marked the debut of bestselling author Flynn as a showrunner. She produced alongside Jessica Rhoades (Sharp objects), Sharon Hall, Karen Wilson and Kelly. The series was a co-production between Endemol Shine North America, its UK production studio Kudos and Amazon Studios.
The decision to cancel Utopia after a season comes after Amazon recently picked up a sci-fi drama The extent for a sixth and final season. The retail giant and streamer will also say goodbye to Displays and Goliath in 2021. Amazon’s scripted slate includes series Hunters, Boys, Carnival Row, Jack Ryan and the next one The Lord of the Rings, a league apart and The ringroad, among others.
