UTSA defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix has been placed on administrative leave amid an internal investigation, the school said.

Nix was not a coach in UTSA’s 52-21 win over UTEP on Saturday. The announcement was made during the second half of the game and no further details were provided.

“In order to ensure and protect the integrity of the process, we will not be making any additional comments at this time,” the statement said.

UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said after the game the team didn’t have much time to adjust to the news. Safety coach Jess Loepp replaced the defensive appellant.

β€œIt happened so late it made it difficult,” said Traylor. “But we did it. We got up late last night, we got up early this morning. We played a part. Coach Loepp did a great job calling the defense today. Our assistants did a great job in the field. … We all had to do more. I was there more than usual. We just had to do more. “

Traylor was impressed with the way his players handled the transition.

β€œI love these guys,” he says. “I’m proud of them. It’s hard on the kids, what they went through.”

Nix has been a longtime defensive assistant, most notably as defensive coordinator in South Carolina under Steve Spurrier and Ole Miss under Houston Nutt.
