MADISON, Wisconsin. – With people over 65 becoming eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine starting next week, UW-Madison says it has been notified of 1,800 members of their college community to make appointments.

The university says eligible people can also request the vaccine and make an appointment with their own health care provider if they do not wish to be vaccinated by the university.

University Health Services was approved as a vaccinator on December 30 and began immunizing qualified individuals as part of phase 1a of the Wisconsin vaccination plan on January 5. This included people in direct contact with COVID-19 patients or with the virus, such as researchers studying the virus or employees testing COVID-19 samples.

The university said it had recently started vaccinating members of the UW Police Department as part of Phase 1b of the vaccination process.

Like most health care providers and immunizers, UW-Madison reminds people that their immunization efforts depend on vaccine availability, as well as state and federal guidance.

The university says it will contact anyone else eligible to schedule a vaccine once final guidelines are released on who else will be included in phase 1b and other phases of the vaccination process.
