THREE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY
– The rush to develop a vaccine has gathered momentum with news from Moderna Inc. that it would ask US and EU regulators to authorize emergency use of its vaccine. The first results show that the vaccine is more than 94% effective.
– The virus threw the NFL season into chaos again. The Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers contest has been moved from Thanksgiving to Wednesday with more than 20 Ravens on the COVID-19 roster, and the game is still at risk of not playing as planned. The Denver Broncos started an undrafted rookie wide receiver at quarterback due to COVID-19 protocol violations.
– Tough new restrictions take effect across California as the state hit a new record with 7,400 hospitalizations for coronavirus. Los Angeles County, which has a population of 10 million, has imposed new rules requiring residents to stay at home as much as possible.
THE NUMBERS: The Thanksgiving long weekend will create volatility in key viral metrics early this week. The United States has averaged 162,000 new cases a day over the past week, and a record 93,000 people are hospitalized with the virus.

ICYMI: the country’s law enforcement authorities are on alert for potential scams related to the COVID-19 vaccine. They worry about organized crime groups exploiting Americans with things like fake vaccines.
ON THE HORIZON: With the progress of vaccine development, the ball will soon be in the court of the Food and Drug Administration. Its December 10 meeting could pave the way for immediate distribution of the Pfizer vaccine.
