Anti-vaccine protesters in Manhattan demolished a mobile COVID-19 test site tent during a demonstration Monday against the vaccine mandate in New York City, Vice News reported.

Protesters marched through the city to protest a city-wide mandate demanding that all workers in the city – including teachers and school staff – be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be tested weekly. The march finally gathered in front of the Department of Education in Brooklyn.

During the protest, some protesters overturned a tent and overturned the table and chairs at a mobile test center in Union Square in New York City.

New York City’s immunization mandate for teachers and school staff went into effect on October 4, the same day as the protest.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said that as of Monday morning, 95% of the city’s 148,000 public school staff had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, the Associated Press reported.

“Our parents need to know that their children will be safe,” de Blasio said, citing the AP report. “They entrust their children to us. This is the purpose of this mandate. All adults in our schools are now vaccinated, and this will be the rule in the future.”

The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
