Valeri Nichushkin signs with the Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche has signed a one-year contract with winger Valeri Nichushkin, 24, in the NHL for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. Nichushkin was the 10th overall draft pick in the 2013 NHL draft, but failed to advance his career after two stints with the Dallas Stars. Russia has had a very successful career in the KHL, but seems determined to succeed in North America.

The Avalanche transaction was confirmed at $ 850,000 in the NHL and AHL. Nichushkin would require waivers to be sent to the Colorado Eagles AHL, but his contract would be fully buried and the team would not have to undergo a cap to send him back. Nichushkin was purchased by the Stars on June 29, a few days before it became a FRG, but became UFA until the Avalanche signed it.

Nichushkin is talented, but he has never been able to get him into the NHL. He struggled to adapt to the two coaches he played for (Lindy Ruff and Jim Montgomery). Both are considered defensive coaches and it seems that Nichushkin never understood the system. Jared Bednar is a little more liberating as a coach of the attackers. I therefore hope that this combination will work well for both sides.

In the press release, general manager Joe Sakic has made it quite clear that Nichushkin would be part of the fight to get a job in the NHL at a training camp. A handful of other players already members of the organization (both older and younger) will fight for the same positions.

"Valeri is a big and young winger who adds depth to our list and brings competition to our training camp," said Joe Sakic, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Avalanche. "He brings the NHL experience to our team and we are excited to have it with our organization."

After his stay in Dallas, Nichushkin became a very competitive player. This meant that he did not give up much defense, but did not score offensively either (he had not scored any goals last year). I think that with a higher event system in the last six positions like Avalanche, it could provide positive results.

This is a bet for a boot camp, low risk and average reward.
